Essential Gear Checklist for Your Bonefishing Trip to the Bahamas

bonefishing trip

Planning a bonefishing trip to the Bahamas is an exciting endeavor—crystal-clear flats, elusive silver ghosts, and the thrill of the hunt make it an angler’s dream. But before you cast your first fly in South Andros or any of the Bahamian islands, it’s important to be well-prepared. Bonefishing isn’t just about skill—it’s about having the right gear that works with the environment.

At Mars Bay Bonefish Lodge, we often welcome guests who are new to flats fishing or unfamiliar with the local conditions. To help make your trip smooth, productive, and enjoyable, we’ve put together this essential gear checklist.

1. Fly Rods and Reels

A solid 8-weight fly rod is the standard choice for bonefish, though a 9-weight can be helpful if the wind kicks up. Bring at least two rods if possible—one as a backup or pre-rigged with a different fly for quick changes.

Reel: Choose a saltwater-grade reel with a smooth, sealed drag system. Bonefish are fast and powerful, so your reel must hold at least 150–200 yards of backing (20–30 lb is typical).

2. Fly Line and Leader Setup

Your fly line should be a weight-forward, floating line made for tropical conditions—warm-weather lines won’t wilt in the Bahamian heat. A clear or lightly colored line is often best for spooky fish.

Leaders should be 9–12 feet long, tapered to 12–16 lb. Adding fluorocarbon tippet can help with stealth in ultra-clear water. Don’t forget extra spools of leader and tippet material.

3. Bonefish Flies

Bahamas bonefish tend to be less selective than those in other regions, but your fly selection should still mimic local prey and conditions. Here are some tried-and-true patterns:

  • Gotcha (various sizes and weights)
  • Crazy Charlie
  • Squimp
  • EP Spawning Shrimp
  • Mini Puffs

Bring flies in different sizes (mostly #4 to #8) and weights to match both shallow and deeper flats. Bead chain eyes are great for skinny water, while lead eyes sink faster for deeper spots.

4. Clothing for the Flats

Comfort and sun protection are key. Here’s what to pack:

  • Long-sleeve sun shirts (breathable, quick-dry, UPF rated)
  • Lightweight fishing pants or shorts
  • Buff or neck gaiter
  • Wide-brimmed hat or cap with a sun flap
  • Polarized sunglasses (amber or copper lenses are ideal)
  • Fingerless gloves (to prevent line cuts and sunburn)

At Mars Bay Bonefish Lodge, we see many anglers underestimate the intensity of the tropical sun. Being covered doesn’t just protect your skin—it also helps you stay cool.

5. Footwear

Flats boots or wading shoes are a must for walking the coral and sand flats. Look for quick-dry, snug-fitting boots with solid ankle support. Neoprene socks help prevent rubbing and blisters.

Even if you’re fishing from a skiff, bring a pair of non-marking boat shoes or sandals for comfort and grip.

6. Waterproof Gear and Accessories

A small waterproof pack or sling is perfect for carrying extra flies, leaders, pliers, a water bottle, and sunscreen. Keep your phone or camera in a waterproof case or dry bag.

Don’t forget:

  • Nippers or line cutters
  • Hemostats or pliers
  • Small towel or hand rag
  • Insect repellent (DEET-free options are best for gear)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen

7. Optional (But Helpful) Extras

  • Fly tying kit – if you like to adapt based on local conditions
  • Travel rod tube – for protecting your gear in transit
  • Fish-friendly landing net – though many guides will handle the fish for you
  • Notebook or journal – to record your fishing experience and insights
